“They say you have to kiss a lot of frogs to find a prince, but in the Auckland property market, we only had to see six. While other buyers were spending every weekend for six months at auctions, we found our diamond in the rough in Manurewa after just half a dozen viewings. We weren’t looking for a ‘finished’ home—we were looking for the right start to our NZ Home Journey.“

The “Why ‘Manurewa” Strategy
When we told friends we were looking in Manurewa, we got “the look.” You know the one the raised eyebrows and the “Are you sure?” comments. But while others were paying a premium for a zip code, we were looking for value, space, and a solid foundation.
We chose Manurewa for three very specific reasons that outweighed any old reputation:
- The “Good Bones” at a Fair Price: We wanted a house that was structurally sound, even if it wasn’t super modern-looking. In ‘Rewa, we found a two-storey home, solid brick and tile on the lower level, with weatherboard on the second floor that hadn’t been touched in decades. And yes, it’s a two-storey house, and it turned out to be the perfect “semi fixer-upper”: no major rot, just a lot of potential.
- The Section Size: You just don’t get 313sqm+ sections in the central city without a multi-million dollar mortgage. Here, we have room to breathe and the security of a gated property.
- The 2026 Growth Factor: With the new transport links and the influx of other first-home buyers like us, we could see the area changing. We didn’t want the “finished” suburb; we wanted the one that was on its way up.
We all know that Manurewa doesn’t have the best reputation when it comes to safety. It’s often labeled as “the hood” or a place where gangs originated. But we’ve come to realize that safety isn’t just about a suburb’s name—it’s about the steps you take.
We lived in Flat Bush for three years before buying our first home, and during that time, our car was stolen twice from off-road parking. It’s ironic because Flat Bush is generally seen as a nice, modern suburb.
That experience made us realize that no matter how prestigious your address is, if someone intends to commit a crime, they will. In the end, it really comes down to the precautions you take to make your home and family feel safe.
Before we even thought about styling our home, we focused on making it safe. Even though we felt that nothing would likely happen to us in Manurewa especially being close to the police station, churches, and the main town centre—we didn’t want to rely on assumptions.
For us, it was about taking control of what we could and creating a space where we truly felt secure from day one.
That’s why our first budget went into a modern automatic gate and a smart lock before we even bought a single cushion. Security came before styling. It just made sense to protect what we worked so hard for first.
We added sensor lights, improved our outdoor lighting, and checked every entry point—because peace of mind isn’t something you leave to chance.
And honestly? We would’ve done the exact same thing even if we had bought in a “nicer” suburb.
Because here’s the truth no one really talks about: no postcode can guarantee your safety.
Manurewa gets talked about a lot and not always in a good way. But what we’ve seen is different. We see families, kids playing outside, people going to work, small businesses, and a community that’s just trying to build a better life just like us.
Is it perfect? No. But no suburb is.
So don’t let headlines or other people’s opinions decide for you.
Drive around. Walk the streets. Visit at night. Pay attention to how it feels not just how it looks online.
Because at the end of the day, the right home isn’t about chasing a “perfect” suburb…
It’s about finding a place where you feel safe, grounded, and at peace.
Trust your gut.
